Es ist bekannt als <strong>Ausl\u00f6ser des Pfeifferschen Dr\u00fcsenfiebers<\/strong> (infekti\u00f6se Mononukleose). Da EBV vor allem durch Tr\u00f6pfcheninfektionen \u00fcbertragen wird, bspw. beim K\u00fcssen, tr\u00e4gt das Pfeiffersche Dr\u00fcsenfieber auch die umgangssprachlichen Bezeichnungen \u201eKusskrankheit\u201c oder \u201eStudentenfieber\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>EBV geh\u00f6rt zu den h\u00e4ufigsten Viren: Sch\u00e4tzungen zufolge sind weltweit <strong>rund 95 Prozent der Menschen damit infiziert<\/strong>. W\u00e4hrend EBV-Infektionen in der Kindheit oft symptomlos verlaufen, erkranken vor allem Menschen, die sich erst im Jugend- oder Erwachsenenalter infizieren, h\u00e4ufiger am Pfeifferschen Dr\u00fcsenfieber. Zu dessen Symptomen z\u00e4hlen u.\u202fa. Fieber, M\u00fcdigkeit, Kopf-, Glieder- und Halsschmerzen sowie geschwollene Lymphknoten, manchmal auch Schwellungen von Leber und Milz. In der Regel heilt das Pfeiffersche Dr\u00fcsenfieber nach etwa drei Wochen aus. In seltenen F\u00e4llen kann es das chronische Ersch\u00f6pfungssyndrom (chronic fatigue syndrome, CFS) ausl\u00f6sen. F\u00fcr diese <strong>Studie<\/strong> standen den Forscher:innen <strong>rund 62 Millionen Blutproben<\/strong> von mehr als <strong>zehn Millionen Angeh\u00f6rigen des US-Milit\u00e4rs<\/strong> aus den Jahren 1993 bis 2013 zur Verf\u00fcgung. Die Proben stammten aus verpflichtenden, regelm\u00e4\u00dfigen HIV-Tests.<\/p>\n<p>Von den rund zehn Millionen untersuchten Milit\u00e4rangeh\u00f6rigen erkrankten insgesamt 955 an Multipler Sklerose. Bei 801 dieser Betroffenen lie\u00df sich anhand der verf\u00fcgbaren Blutproben nachvollziehen, ob sie vor ihrer MS-Diagnose eine EBV-Infektion durchgemacht hatten. Dabei zeigte sich: <strong>Bei 800 der 801 MS-Betroffenen<\/strong> waren sp\u00e4testens in der letzten Blutprobe vor der MS-Diagnose <strong>Antik\u00f6rper gegen das Epstein-Barr-Virus nachweisbar<\/strong>. Das entspricht einer <strong>H\u00e4ufigkeit von 99,875 Prozent<\/strong> \u2013 deutlich mehr als die EBV-Rate von rund 95 Prozent in der Gesamtbev\u00f6lkerung. Zumal nicht auszuschlie\u00dfen ist, dass die einzige EBV-negative Person, die an MS erkrankte, sich noch nach Entnahme der letzten Blutprobe mit dem Virus infizierte. Damit zeigt die Studie, dass eine MS-Erkrankung ohne vorausgegangene EBV-Infektion zumindest sehr selten, wenn nicht sogar ausgeschlossen ist.<\/p>\n<p>Insgesamt, so die Forscher:innen, <strong>zeigt die Studie einen 32-fachen Anstieg des Multiple Sklerose-Risikos durch eine Epstein-Barr-Virus-Infektion<\/strong>. Die Autor:innen dieser Studie konnten zeigen, dass die strukturelle \u00c4hnlichkeit zwischen einem Bestandteil des Epstein-Barr-Virus und einem im Zentralnervensystem (ZNS) vorkommenden <strong>Protein dazu f\u00fchren kann, dass das Immunsystem diese beiden Substanzen \u201everwechselt\u201c<\/strong>. Genauer gesagt, lernt das Immunsystem bei einer EBV-Infektion, den f\u00fcr EBV spezifischen Transkriptionsfaktor EBNA-1 zu erkennen, der an der Vervielf\u00e4ltigung des Virus beteiligt ist. EBNA-1 weist jedoch eine gewisse \u00c4hnlichkeit zum Protein GlialCAM (glial cell adhesion molecule) auf, das in bestimmten Nervenzellen im ZNS vorkommt.
